Join the National Park Service as a surf lifeguard at Gateway National Recreation Area (Sandy Hook, N.J.; Great Kills Park, Staten Island, N.Y.; and Riis Park Beach in Queens, N.Y. ).
There are two steps to the hiring process.
First Step: Five levels of surf lifeguard positions have been posted to www.usajobs.gov. Depending on experience, applicants could apply for jobs ranging from beginner and lead lifeguard (recreation aid GS3, GS4; lead recreation aid GS 5) to supervisory lifeguard (supervisory recreation assistant GS6, GS7).
To apply, go to www.usajobs.gov. Under “keywords,” type in National Park Service. Under “location,” type in New York or New Jersey.
Second Step: All applicants must pass a surf-lifeguard test. Candidates must swim 550 yards continuously (in a 25-yard pool or other measured course) in less than 10 minutes and run 1.25 miles continuously (on a ¼-mile track or other measured course) in less than 12 minutes.

Base pay range is $15.39 to $26.52/per hour; Sunday pay range is $19.24 to $33.15/per hour; overtime range is $23.09 to $39.78/per hour. This continuous announcement is open to 6/25/20 or until all the positions have been filled.
