Job Description

The Barkers Landing Barracudas are looking for One Head Swim Coach for our neighborhood summer-league swim team. This is seasonal contract position that will last from May 1st through June 30th, 2020. The coaches will be Red Cross certified and available on the first day of swim practice. Practices will start in the afternoons and switch to mornings when school is let out for summer (late May).

 Barkers Landing is in the Houston Energy Corridor, near the intersection of I-10 and Highway 6. The Barracudas compete in the West Houston Aquatic League (WHALe) and are a competitive team, with emphasis on improving skills, good sportsmanship, and having fun! Our Head Swim Coach will work with and manage the Assistant Swim Coaches and is responsible for coaching and managing the team. Head Coach responsibilities include:

  • Plan and conduct daily swim team workouts and provide instruction to swim team members; observe/instruct/improve the swimming skills and the development of all team members.
  • Ensure the safety of swim team members and performing lifesaving and/or first aid procedures if necessary.
  • Engage and encourage young swimmers to develop swimming skills and confidence.
  • Enforce league or team rules and policies as well as pool rules and regulations.
  • Assist and support team-related activities, parties, spirit events, etc.
  • Respond to parent and swimmer questions and concerns.
  • Create swim meet entry list and relay squads.
  • Understand the function and flow of a swim meet and be able to operate in this environment.
  • Act as a role model and a leader to the team members by showing and promoting good sportsmanship and team spirit.
  • Manage Assistant Swim Coaches (performance, schedule, conduct)
  • Work with the team Board members and Assistant Coaches to accomplish these tasks.


  • Possess and maintain the required American Red Cross Life-guarding/CPR/First Aid certifications – which must be valid from the first practice session through completion of season.
  • Be eligible to work in the United States and pass a league performed criminal background check.
  • Conduct and attend all swim practices, time trials, stroke clinics, and swim meets (Including the Meet of Champions and All-Stars Meet).
  • Pass a league-required criminal background test and child abuse prevention training.

Job Types: Part-time – Contract

Duration: Approximately 2 months (Start May through End June 2020)

 Head Coach Experience:

  • Competitive swimming: 4 years (Preferred)
  • Coaching, teaching, assisting or mentoring children.: 2 years (Preferred)
