Position Title: Assistant Coach

Club: Mid-Michigan Aquatics Hurricanes (MMA)

Location: DeWitt, Michigan

Reports To: Head Coach

The Mid-Michigan Aquatics Hurricanes (MMA) are a year-round USA Swimming competitive swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. We are a 2019 Bronze Medal team in USA Swimming’s Club Excellence Program. We are also a non-profit club run by a volunteer Board of Directors. Mid-Michigan Aquatics is seeking a qualified Assistant Coach who will help lead our year around USA swimming program. We currently have approximately 250 swimmers who swim at one of our three sites. They range in age from 6-20 years old.

The ideal candidate is energetic, knowledgeable and able to communicate with our staff, swimmers and parents.   It is expected that the assistant coach will foster positive relationships.

Assistant Coach Roles and Responsibilities of USA Swim:

  • Responsible for all levels of swimming in the USA program
  • Design and oversee training plans for all training groups
  • Oversee seasonal progression of athletes, set goals with swimmers and monitor phases of development with individual swimmers
  • Prompt attendance at all scheduled workouts and swim meets to include weekends
  • Assist in setting training schedules, practice groups, and athlete placement within groups
  • Facilitate individual age appropriate goal setting process with all swimmers
  • Knowledgeable of swimmer’s code of conduct and follow the process as outlined in MMA Handbook
  • Establish an environment that fosters positive team attitudes, encourages self-discipline, sportsmanship and responsibility


  • Attend Daily Practice
  • Attend USA Meets
  • Supervise Swimmers in pool area at all times
  • Give instruction and feedback on training and technique
  • Communicate with parents and swimmers including meet information, results, feedback
  • Greet, acknowledge and interact with members at all times
  • Create an educational, safe and inviting experience for all participants
  • Provide a safe, clean and organized pool area
  • Present and participate in all team sponsored events including End of Season Dinner Banquet

In charge of:

  • Attend coaching staff meetings
  • Team organizing, planning and development


  • Must have (or obtain prior to being on deck) certification in Adult and Pediatric/Child CPR and AED
  • Passionate about swimming and working with kids
  • Knowledgeable of competitive USA swimming and all swimming strokes (Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Freestyle)
  • Experience leading large groups of athletes and families
  • Must possess/be able to demonstrate
    • Professionalism
    • Leadership skills
    • Decision making ability (in the interest of athletes and organization)
    • Timely and professional communication (written and verbal) with coaches, parents, swimmers and Board of Directors
    • Ability to work well with others
  • Willing to follow directives from Board of Directors
  • Ability to work with and maintain professional relationships DeWitt, Grand Ledge and Okemos Public School staff and High School swim coaches
  • Current USA Swimming Coach in good standing, preferred Level 1
  • Ability to work, training, and instruct one or multiple practice groups Monday-Friday, able to work weekends for swim meets that often require travel with federal mileage and lodging reimbursement


  • Minimum 2 years Coaching Experience at Club or NCAA level
  • License:
    • USA-S Swim Coach (Preferred)
    • Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED (Required)
