Job Description

Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club is a year-round Swim Team that competes out of  Asheville, NC and Waynesville, NC. 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club Assistant Coach must be motivated, energetic, and eager to learn, with a clear passion for teaching and working with children. The assistant coach will be working with athletes ages 4-18 with abilities ranging from the novice to Junior National Level athletes across two locations.  As the team is growing, this position has a potential to become full time.  The Assistant Coach’s primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties and tasks:

  1. To maintain a safe pool environment during practices and meets.
    1. The Assistant Coach will always use best practices when running workouts in water and on deck. Safety is the most important part of being Assistant Coach at Smoky Mountain Aquatic Clu.
    2. The Assistant Coach is responsible for maintaining a culture centered around American Red Cross Water Safety and USA Swimming’s Safe Sport.
  2. To provide instruction on stroke technique with an eye for improving skills of individuals and the team.
    1. The Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club Assistant Coach will work with the Head Coach to design and implement seasonal plans for athletes, including designing practices and dryland sessions.
    2. The Assistant Coach will provide constructive feedback to swimmers.
    3. The coach’s role is to be a model for positivity, to be an effective problem solver, and understand how/when to use various teaching styles.
  3. To attend all required Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club practices, swim meets, and meetings while modeling the proper dress, language, demeanor, and sportsmanship for athletes.
    1. The SMAC Assistant coach will attend no more than 6 practices per week.
    2. The SMAC Assistant coach will attend weekly staff meetings to go over the day to day operations, administration, and team related items.  
    3. The SMAC Assistant coach attends competitions 1 to 2 times per month, with travel lodging and expenses covered by the team.
  4. The Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club Assistant Coach will be expected to interact effectively with parents.
  5. The Assistant Coach understands the objectives of Western Carolina Aquatic Group and adheres to coaching policies outlined in the Coaches’ Handbook.


  1. Minimum 3 years of coaching experience. (Required)
  2. Ability to possess or maintain all required USA Swimming coach requirements. (Required)
  3. ASCA Level 2 Certified or higher. (Preferred)
  4. Demonstrated success of swimmers by performance.
  5. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred
  6. Technical skills: Experience with the TeamUnify platform, Hy-Tek Software, and Google Drive.
  7. Drivers license and automobile required for travel.


  • Primary Location: Asheville, NC
  • Secondary Location: Waynesville, NC 
  • Schedule: Part-time, with the possibility of becoming a full time, salaried position in the very near future.  Hours include evenings and weekends. 25 Hours per week. 
  • Salary: $1200 – $1500 per month dependant on experience, with incentive bonuses possible.
  • Travel: Automobile and driver’s license required.
  • Start Date: September 3rd, 2018



  • Ability to swim the competitive strokes, teach strokes, and have fun doing so.
  • Provide effective feedback that gives competitive swimmers the opportunity to master technique, stroke mechanics, and skills. 
  • Lead daily practices under the direction of the Head Coach.
  • Ability to write and lead workouts.
  • Must attend and support swimmers at meets.
  • Excellent customer service skills, energetic, enthusiastic, and motivational

  • Ability to build an effective coach-athlete relationship with members of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Comfortable working with all age groups, including children.

  • Ability to multi-task and be patient.
  • Ability to acknowledge difficult situations and respond accordingly.


Language Ability– Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, clients, and other employees of the organization confidently about expectations, rules, and events.

Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, percentages, and enforce ratios for safety.  Ability to apply basic concepts of basic algebra and geometry to help swimmers calculate time percentages, stroke rates, race pace intervals, in order to help improve swimmers working knowledge and needed changes to achieve time standards.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Treat all swimmers, families, and guests of SMAC with utmost care and respect, always presenting themselves to the SMAC employee standard.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle objects, coaching tools, or equipment; reach with hands and arms; ability to climb ladders.  The employee is also required to swim; demonstrate proper strokes, turns, starts; assist swimmers if in distress, or be a part of coaches relay for meets.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  There are outdoor and indoor pools, pool decks that are sometimes slippery. The work is performed in an athletic club environment, but not limited to outdoor pools, or lakes. The noise level is usually moderate to high at swim meets and practice.
