Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Development Director is responsible on a daily basis for creating a transformative Swim Lesson and Coaching Experience for our program participants, families, members and staff. The Swim Development Director must be able to train, lead and manage a team of instructors to execute an exemplary and robust swim program focused on safety, skill development as well as provide an outstanding service experience to parents and participants.

The Swim Development Director must be a subject matter expert and innovator in YMCA Swim programs including but not limited to: Parent/Child Swim Lessons, Pre-School Swim Lessons, Youth Swim Lessons, Adult Swim Lessons, Private Swim Lessons, Pre-Competitive and Competitive swimming.

The Swim Development Director will ensure success in the following areas of responsibility to support a strong Y Experience: 

  • Performance Achievement – Ultimately accountable for the performance of their team. Directly responsible for hiring, coaching, training and managing all direct reports and ensuring compliance with association hiring practices for all positions within their organizational structure. Conducts reviews and assessments with their staff team that is growth and developmentally focused.
  • Program Enrollment, Growth and Experience - Drives swim and private lesson program enrollment and growth while ensuring a high-quality, safe and transformative Y Experience as demonstrated by program enrollment, reality checks, net-promoter scores, other experience metrics. 
  • Marketing – Executes on all aspects of association marketing strategies as they pertain to swim lessons. Actively promotes swim programs in accordance with YMCA and YMCA of Greater Boston marketing standards. 
  • Youth Development – Leads and coaches staff to ensure high quality programming through the implementation of the YMCA Swim Lesson program.  Monitors and engages in family and participant communication. Provides coaching and instruction to swim team participants in collaboration with the Swim Team Director.
  • Compliance – Ensures accountability and compliance with YMCA safety standards and best practices. Collaborates with Aquatics Director to ensure active participation, attendance and quality curriculum in monthly in-service for swim instruction.  Provides regular certification and ongoing training for staff. Keeps accurate documentation of staff training and certification needs. 
  • Facility Management - Ensures a safe aquatic environment for swimmers and that all equipment is well maintained.  
  • Fiscal management – Works with the Aquatics Director in development of an annual budget as it pertains to instructional swim according to association instructions and ensures successful execution of the plan. Works to identify growth opportunities and address financial deficiencies on a timely basis. 
  • Collaboration – Collaboratively works with the Aquatics Director and aquatic staff to maintain a safe and quality swim environment.  Collaborates and communicates with Membership Department, Business Manager and additional departments as needed to ensure success of swim programs.  Shares information and learning with others and participates in branch wide opportunities and events.

  • The Swim Development Director will collaborate with the Aquatics Director to coordinate training, build in-service trainings and provide resources to branch swim instructors 
  • Timely action planning is in place for individual programs that have performance concerns. 
  • Hire, train and ongoing development of high quality swim instructors.
  • Achieving (at minimum) metric targets and producing meaningful qualitative results. This includes enrollment, net-promoter scores, Y safety standards, budget, and other experience metrics. 
  • A collaborative and strong working relationship between branch operations and Aquatics Swim Programs.

 

Education/Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • A minimum of five years of experience teaching and coaching swimmers.
  • Must have a demonstrated record of accomplishment in swim lessons quality, staff development and management, scheduling, managing enrollments and budgeting
  • YMCA Lifeguarding certification. If Red Cross certified, the employee must obtain YMCA certification within six months of hire. 
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification. If Red Cross or ELLIS certified, the employee must obtain YMCA certification within six months of hire. 
  • Superior Communication skills - both written and verbal. 
  • Possess a concern for detail and accuracy and could delegate responsibility. 
  • Must be highly motivated and possess a positive attitude towards the YMCA, character development and our mission. 
  • Experience in and/or willingness to learn Design Thinking. 
  • Experience supervising staff, developing schedules and class schedules, as well as good member relations and staff relation skills. 
  • Must be aware of YMCA movement and trends in the aquatic field and must continue to enhance his/her knowledge of YMCA Swim Lessons, Youth Development Principles and certifications. 

 

Physical Demands:  

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to frequently interact with other staff and members. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
     

Work Environment:  

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
  • Some weekend and evening work is expected, with the flexibility needed to be available if needed for early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Travel will be necessary when attending trainings or meetings.
