Position Summary:
Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.
Essential Functions:
o Instruct swim lessons in accordance with the YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans, and supporting members and program participants in achieving their goals.
o Builds and maintains effective relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels in the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caretaker involvement.
o Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules as well as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
o Maintains records (e.g. attendance, progress reports)
o Follows all YMCA policies, rules, and regulations and procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
o Organizes, maintains and puts away needed deck and pool equipment. Reports damaged equipment to Aquatics Director.
o Follows emergency protocols.
o Trains and supervises as needed.
o Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient running on the operations.
Qualifications:
o Minimum of 18 years of age.
o CPR for professional rescuers, FA, AED and Lifeguard Certified within 60 days.
o Must have WSI or YMCA Swim Instructor Certification within 60 days, and preferred previous experience with swim lessons and the swim team.

Physical Demands:
o Must be able to remain alert.
o Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke technique.
o Ability to adequately hear noises and identify distress signals.
o Ability to adequately observe many participants at a time.
o Ability to lift equipment and to lift repeatedly with the assistance of the water, a small to average child weighing up to 100 pounds.
o Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
o Ability to read, comprehend and respond to simple instructions, short correspondences and memos.
o Ability to solve practical problems with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
