Viking Swim Club Assistant Swim Coach
PT/FT: Part Time
Schedule: Adjusted annually to match school & practice schedule. Most recent schedule has been approximately M-Th 2:45--6:00 pm, F 12:45-3:30 pm; Season runs from Mid-August to Mid-May with a summer break season. Potential to have conversation, with the right applicant, to run a summer program.
Job Description: Assist head coach of Viking Swim Club. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about stroke mechanics for all 4 of the competitive strokes and have strong teaching and communication skills. The assistant swim coach will provide support to the Head Coach and Viking Swim Team which include writing and leading in-water practices for groups of 10-30 athletes ranging in age from 6 to 18, and coaching alongside head coach as well as independently. The Swim Team Assistant Coach will travel with the team, as needed, to meets away from Petersburg, Alaska. Travel by airplane or ferry may be required.
Other duties include taking attendance, communicating with parents, creating event files, fostering a positive constructive environment that helps swimmers develop skills and confidence, and helping Viking Swim Club achieve its goals.
Requirements:
Strong fundamental understanding of all four competitive strokes. Current USA Swimming Coaching Certifications in good standing which includes CPR, First Aid, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, Concussion Protocol Training, Background Check, Athlete Protection Training, and all other required USA Swimming Coaching courses, or the ability to complete these items prior to employment
Preferred:
Knowledgeable in swim instruction and coaching, with an eye for teaching and correcting technique in all four strokes, starts, turns, and finishes
Ability to work with young swimmers of varying abilities
Ability to balance enthusiasm and patience, with a focus on improving athlete technique while making the sport fun
Ability to exhibit team values of hard work, the pursuit of excellence, and mutual respect for athletes, coaching staff, and competitors, performance, sportsmanship, and athlete protection
Ability and willingness to travel to local and travel swim meets (predominantly within Alaska)
Ability to communicate clearly with athletes, parents, head coach and Board of Directors.
Highly collaborative and committed to working with other coaching staff to better the team and individual athletes
Pay Rate: starting at $20/hour DOE
Viking Swim Club is a USA Swimming registered club in Petersburg, Alaska. Our program has, on average, 60 registered swimmers ages 6-18. Our competitive swim program is active late August through Mid-May.
