Job Description

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibility:

  • Provide supervision and direction of a safe, positive and organized competitive swimming program following the philosophy and goals of the YMCA of the USA and YMCA of Metropolitan Washington Aquatic programs, that will support youth development in spirit, mind and body, strengthen family support and encourage social responsibility
  • Primary responsibility is the safety of participants during practice sessionsSupervisory Responsibility:¨ Provides guidance, leadership, or training to other employees (no direct supervision) ¨ Directly responsible for supervising exempt, professional, or technical employees Job title to which this position reports: Aquatics Director or Assistant Aquatics Director or Aquatics CoordinatorJob titles indirectly reporting to this position: None

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures adequate safety procedures are in place for all practices times
  • Communicates directions and/or corrections in a clear and concise manner
  • Maintains practice control and discipline at all times
  • Coach must be in proper attire (bathing suit, t-shirt and shorts) and on pool deck at least five minutes before start of swim practice
  • Maintains rosters and attendance records
  • Coaches shall not leave the area of their practice group unless participants have left or their safety has been turned over to a department lifeguard, confirming transfer with the guard on deck
  • Designs and delivers practice sessions that teach competitive swimming stroke skills and train swimmers in preparation for competition
  • Evaluates stroke technique of all team members
  • Evaluates team members and record progress
  • Communicates directions and/or corrections in a clear and concise manner
  • Maintains swim team equipment and let supervisor know of any equipment needs or hazards
  • Relates with enthusiasm, patience, courtesy, tact, and concern when dealing with YMCA members, other coaches, swim team members and swim team parents
  • Works cooperatively with other YMCA and program staff
  • Attends and participates YMCA and Swim Team program meetings/trainings as assigned
  • Attends parent meetings, competitions and other team activities as assigned
  • Enforces all facility and pool rules
  • Completes accident/incident reports as necessary
  • Other duties as required

Education, Certification, Skills, and Experience:

    • Must be 17 years of age
    • Complete training for:
      • Blood Borne Pathogens
      • Right to Know
      • Facility Orientation/Aquatic Policy
      • Emergency Procedures
      • Preventing Child Abuse
  • Possess an outgoing personality with the ability to relate well with participants of various age groups
  • Must be attentive, multi-faceted, reliable, and a proven problem solver
  • Must have positive mentality

    • Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification
    • Current CPR and First Aid certifications
    • Obtain YMCA Swim Coach Certification within three (3) months of hire
  • Will be required to complete the YMCA Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving within first year of employment
  • Obtain ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association) level 1 certification- The Foundations of Coaching within first year of employment
