JOB DESCRIPTION

San Ramon Valley Aquatics is one of the largest competitive swim clubs in the East Bay/Tri-Valley area. Founded in 1985, the club has fostered a reputation for developing championship-level swimmers with technical skills and outstanding team spirit and individual character. Our year-round programs develop swimmers from Age 6 up. We also run a successful Masters’ program. For over 30 years, Coach Richard Thornton - former Cal Bears swimmer, a two-time All American, national champion and a former Olympian – successfully led this team as the SRVA Head Coach until his sudden passing in January 2024.

We are now seeking a hardworking, collegial and enthusiastic Head Coach with a track record of success to advance Coach Rich’s legacy and augment SRVA’s mission to create an inclusive, fun and competitive swimming culture for swimmers of all abilities and take this club to new heights.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years of competitive coaching experience with both developmental and high performance/senior swimmers desired
  • Member in good standing with USA Swimming and current on all certifications.
  • Extensive background in competitive swimming, stroke mechanics, and understanding of USAS rules and regulations. 
  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning training, dryland, and functional movement.
  • Prior experience in a leadership role of training, managing, and developing assistant coaches is preferred.
  • ASCA Certifications or equivalent desired but not required
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, and motivational skills with a strong sense of personal integrity.
  • Track record of fostering a culture of team unity among swimmers, parents and staff. 
  • Enthusiasm for continuing coaching education for self and assistant coaches
  • Experience using Google Suite/Microsoft Office, Team Unify, HyTek, and Meet Manager.
  • Legal authority to work in the USA with a valid driver’s license.
  • Available to travel as required to Swim Meets
  • Must pass background check requirements

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

LEADERSHIP

  • Lead SRVA’s mission and philosophy to create an atmosphere where children learn valuable life lessons from their experiences in a structured, fun, yet competitive swim program that provides opportunities for swimmers to develop to their fullest potential. 
  • Act at all times with integrity and represent SRVA favorably to all stakeholders at all occasions
  • Acts as a role model for swimmers with a positive, proactive manner that inspires and support the athletes and their families
  • Foster a culture of unity among staff, swimmers, and families.
  • Able to engage in constructive dialogue and feedback with families of swimmers as required
  • Collaborate with coaching staff to provide continuity and training progressions across all training groups.
  • Maintain and increase overall club participation, including participation at the highest levels of the sport (e.g. Sectionals/Futures, Zone Championships, NCSA Championships, USAS Junior Nationals, USAS Nationals, and Olympic Trials).
  • Collaborate with the Coaches and the Board to ensure that SRVA programs fit the needs of swimmers, families, and staff.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the sport of swimming and encourage continuous professional development of staff
  • Serve as the lead coach for a group or groups within the team and attend all practices, meet sessions and functions for your designated group(s).
  • Create full-season training plans for stroke technique progression, training progression, dryland, and taper strategies for assigned group(s).
  • Bring innovative philosophies and techniques and not be afraid of experimenting

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Ensure full compliance with all USA Swimming policies
  • Negotiate pool/lane access details with the City of San Ramon and complete all necessary documentation for rentals (practices and meets).
  • Manage and collaborate with other Coaches on hiring, scheduling, and development of lead and assistant coaching staff.
  • Ensure all year-round coaches are given an annual performance review and recommend appropriate pay increases.
  • Work with appropriate SRVA Board Members on day-to-day operational aspects of the team.
  • Coordinate with Team Administrator to submit, update, and finalize entries to meets.
  • Develop practice and meet schedules and maintain website calendar.
  • Engage actively in club promotion, swimmer evaluations, and swimmer retention.
  • Interact and communicate with parents, swimmers and coaches in a professional manner
  • Contribute to overall team communications and respond to all communications in a timely manner.
  • Update or guide website updates, as needed.
  • Maintain vendor contracts and coordinate team apparel for staff and athletes as necessary
  • Collaborate with the Master’s Head Coach to provide oversight to the SRVA Master’s Swim program
  • Represent SRVA at Pacific Swim, Zone 2 and USA Swimming meetings
  • Join the SRVA BOD with a voting role. 
  • Attend SRVA BOD meetings to develop and implement team goals, maintain an effective budget, and plan for future seasons. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the SRVA BOD. 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
