Job Description

Hickam Hurricanes located on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Honolulu HI is seeking a motivated and training oriented Head Coach to run our year round competitive swim team.    NO relocation expenses will be provided.

The Head Coach will report to a parent led Board of Directors and will be asked to manage all day-to-day wetside operations of Hickam Hurricanes. In addition to coaching no less than 2 groups, the Head Coach will supervise and train assistant coaches. 

Expected Job Duties:

Serve as the Head Swim Coach for the team’s competitive swim program: 

  • Prioritize the safety of all swimmers during practices and at meets, follow proper protocol and guidelines set forth by Hawaiian Swimming, the LSC and Hickam Hurricanes. Safe Sport knowledgeable.

  • Build a positive, inclusive, safe and supportive team environment that fosters personal growth & development, teamwork and sportsmanship for both athletes and coaching staff.

  • Prepare and execute comprehensive training programs at all levels that meet the needs of each practice group in stroke technique and development and in alignment with the competition calendar for short course, long course and championship seasons.

  • Assessment and assignment of swimmers to training groups and appropriate goal setting. Maintain regular communication with swimmers and/or parents to assess progress.

  • Collaborate with the Hickam Hurricanes Board to build effective assistant coaching staff. Would be responsible for acquisition, onboarding and termination if applicable of coaching staff. Would ensure assistant coaches are enforcing team rules, regulations, and board policies.

  • Management of assistant coach staff to include training, mentoring and scheduling to ensure all swim practices and meets have adequate coaching coverage. Work collaboratively to develop and implement a cohesive vision and training plan throughout the program. 

  •  Dedicate time each week to administrative duties such as set writing, long term training plans and meet entries, to ensure program success.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current USA Swimming coach member in good standing, including lifeguard, first aid and all USA Swimming coach courses and certifications.

  • Coaching experience that demonstrates a knowledge of developmental and advanced swimmers in stroke technique and training methodologies. Strong understanding of overall balance of training for distance and sprint, taper techniques. 

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.

  • Proficient in use of meet management files, USA swimming, and gmail.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to effectively interact with athletes, parents, staff and the board.

  • Ability to demonstrate reliability, availability, and ethical behavior including punctuality, confidentiality, professionalism, positive and constructive feedback.

  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, attention to detail, accuracy and follow through.

  • Knowledge, compliance and commitment to Safe Sport and USA Swimming regulations.

The Head Coach position is salaried and required hours will include evening practices and participation in weekend meets. This position will also require working meets that are located on neighbor islands. This position is eligible for paid time off, neighbor island travel expenses covered and reimbursement for all coach recertification and USA Swimming registration.
