Job Description
North Side Swim Team is currently seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and encouraging assistant coach. The North Side Swim Team (NSST) is a developmental and competitive year-round USA Swimming swim team in Des Moines, Iowa. Its mission is to develop high character athletes by providing a high quality, age appropriate, educational swim training experience and high caliber competition in a safe, healthy, positive environment at an affordable price. The coaching staff must be able to attend all practices for their group as well as any meets their swimmers participate in. The coaching staff works together and supports each other and on occasion may be asked to fill in for another coach and their group if something comes up that they cannot be there.
NSST practices at Des Moines North High School. There may be additional practice locations in the summer. There are two seasons per year: Fall/Winter (September through March) and Summer (April through August).
NSST is looking for a coach to work with its younger age group (5-8 years old) and/or its older beginner group (9-14). Preferred candidates have a prior competitive swimming background and/or coaching or teaching experience. You will work with the Head Coach to administer the season plan and workouts for each practice. Pay to be proportional to experience at an hourly rate. This is a part-time position. You will need to meet all required USA Swimming coaching requirements prior to starting with the team and will be reimbursed after the completion of the season. Start time is no later than April 2024. Time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours a week for practices with the potential of more. Practice and meet times range from 4-8:30 M-F and Sat/Sun 9-1pm; there are typically 5-7 Recreational Club meets per season and 1-2 USA Swimming meets a month. The North Side Swim Team (NSST) was formed in 1978 by Central Iowa Swimming legend Lonny Kerman. Since that time the team has been members of the Central Hawkeye Conference during the summer and the Two Rivers Conference during the winter. It is one of the largest teams in both conferences, with an average of 150 swimmers per season. Its swimmers come from diverse backgrounds and reside in all parts of Des Moines and its suburbs. The club has swimmers who grow up to swim on high school teams at North, Hoover, East, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Johnston/Urbandale, Dowling, Valley, Ankeny, Southeast Polk, and Waukee. NSST is proud of the older swimmers who return to the club each year to help teach and mentor younger swimmers. It is this strong sense of community that makes the program so worthwhile.
NSST believes in accepting all children who wish to swim, regardless of skill level or experience. It stresses self improvement, self discipline, physical fitness, and team success above individuals winning. This approach has led to great success. In the summer of 2023 the team won its 44th straight Summer Conference Championship. In the Winter of 2019-2020 it won its 29th Winter Championship out of 30 years.
