Job Description

Dowling Catholic Riptide Swim Club is looking for a full-time head coach to lead our competitive

swim team.  ThRe ideal candidate would be an experienced swim coach who understands the

importance of the role in creating a positive culture that encourages swimmers and coaches to

develop to their full potential. The Head Coach should feel comfortable partnering with high

school coaches and club parents to lead the development of swimmers through technical

training. They are expected to serve as a mentor to assistant coaches as well as the swimmers

coming up in the program. Most importantly, they should be passionate about swimming and the

swimming community and work to instill that same love for the sport in our club members.

CLUB PURPOSE:

Dowling Catholic Riptide Swim Club (Riptide) is part of the Dowling Catholic High School

Aquatics programming. Riptide has the same values as Dowling Catholic High School. It will

inspire a Christ-centered love of aquatics and respect for fellow human beings through the

application of moral principles and excellence. Riptide also stresses the six pillars of character:

Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Riptide wants every

athlete to have a positive experience while being a part of a team that builds physical, social,

spiritual and emotional skills.

POSITION:

• Full-time and reports directly to the High School Athletic Director.

• Responsible for representing the Riptide Swim Team in a positively in the local

community.

• Maintain memberships and certifications required by USA Swimming and Iowa

Swimming, as well as all other governing bodies.

• Develop practice schedule and practice plans

• Hiring and scheduling of assistant coaches

• Collaborate with the Riptide board on club activities including budgeting and recruitment.

• On-deck coaching and swim meet attendance required.

• Start date: Aug 15, 2024. The position will remain open until filled.

CLUB DESCRIPTION:

Riptide is a club program of over 170 members during the short course yards season and over

100 during the long course meters season. Our competitive team is for swimmers ages 6-18

and partners with the school to run a learn to swim program in the summers for ages 4-15.  Our

home pool is the Dowling Catholic High School pool (25y indoor) year-round and seasonally

uses the Ashworth pool (50m outdoor) in Des Moines.  Riptide is located in West Des Moines,

IA and is part of the Iowa Swimming LSC.  

ON DECK COACHING

• Responsible for leading assistant coaches in the technical development of swimmers in

all groups within the club.

• Develop positive relationships with swimmers across the club focused on encouraging

personal development resulting in swimmer retention year of year

• Work collaboratively with the Dowling High School coaches and Riptide board to develop

and align on the long-term vision of the club.   

• Represent the club on deck at swim meets.

• Mentor and provide positive feedback to assistant coaches to support their development

• Ensure USA Swimming and Club policies are fully enforced to provide a safe positive

environment for all members

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

• Serve as the team’s liaison for meet entries and meet results. (Using Team Unify)

• Lead planning and running 1 LCM invitational.  Additional meets may be discussed.

• Assist the Board of Advisors in planning and running team bonding events.

• Provide regular communication with athletes and parents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. College Degree Preferred

2. Competitive Swimming Experience

3. Age Group Coaching Experience

4. Able to meet USA-Swimming Coaching Safety Requirements and pass all applicable

background checks before starting employment.

COMPENSATION

1. This is a full-time, contract position with a starting pay between $50,000 and $65,000.

3. Approved expense reimbursement for team travel and meet expenses

4. Approved expense reimbursement for educational training and travel
