Job Description

Title:                COHO Head Developmental Coach 
Department:            Recreation
FSLA Status:            Full-time – Exempt


Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the Head Coach, The Head Developmental Coach will be responsible for the administration of the COHO Developmental Program, working within the established club framework developed by the Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach. This position will provide instruction and training to swimmers ranging in age and ability. Daily operations of running the club will be expected regarding communication, planning, scheduling and staff development. This is a great opportunity to be involved with establishing the identity and direction of the program while staying true to the Mission and Vision of the COHO Swim Club. Mission: To educate and support our athletes in a safe and healthy environment where goals can be set and achieved all while learning lifelong skill. Vision: To provide coaches, facilities, and support for increased proficiency in competitive amateur swimming; to encourage and develop sound swimming skills; to develop good sportsmanship, individual integrity, and a positive team atmosphere. 


Supervision Received:
Reports to the COHO Head Coach with secondary supervision provided by the COHO Head Age Group Coach – Recreation Department.

Supervision Exercised:
Part-time swim coaches working with the swim club.

Essential Functions:
•    Is responsible, in conjunction with the Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach, for all phases of coaching and training for the COHO Swim Club in accordance with the philosophies, goals and objectives of the Deerfield Park District and COHO Swim Club.      
•    In conjunction with the Head Coach and the Park District Aquatics Manager (when using park district pools), schedule practices, meets, tryouts, and stroke clinics. 
•    Maintains communication and a good working relationship with School District staff, facility personnel and maintenance personnel.                 
•    In conjunction with the Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach maintains record boards and achievement program, orders t-shirts, caps, laps for COHO and any current or future achievement programs.  
•    Answers phone calls and returns calls and emails as needed.
•    In conjunction with the Head Coach, Head Age Group Coach and COHO Parents Association Board, assists with Safe Sport Program, annual banquet, hosted meet planning, parent education and training, parent/team meetings, meet entries, laps for COHO event, tryouts, and social events.
•    Is responsible for developing swimming and dryland management plans for the Developmental group levels.
•    Is responsible for coaching the Developmental group levels, assisting with other groups, and covering practices for other groups when needed.
•    Is responsible for assisting in maintaining updated certifications of all COHO coaches to the specifications of the United States Swimming Standards
•    With the assistance of the Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach, is responsible for determining goals for the swim club and reporting progress to the Parents Association Board.
•    In conjunction with the Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach, is responsible for recruiting new swimmers.
•    In conjunction with the Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach, contributes to and/or produces and a weekly newsletter update.
•    Is responsible for working with all members of the COHO Board in training and assisting them in their volunteer positions when requested.
•    Maintains communication within the Park District’s organizational structure through attendance at staff meetings and program events as required along with written correspondence when appropriate.
•    Attends conferences, workshops, seminars, etc. as they pertain to the position’s area of responsibility with the Head Coach’s approval.
•    Remains involved in continuing education through participation in seminars, clinics and classes related to the field of aquatics and coaching.

Marginal Functions:
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Contacts Outside of Own Department:
Children of all ages and parents, School District #113 (high school), Park District of Highland Park, Illinois Swimming, Inc., USA Swimming, Inc.

Tools and Equipment Used:
•    Various swimming and training equipment.  
•    Various specialized swim team management software applications, Facebook, Instagram, and like social media.
•    Common office equipment, including computers, copier, and miscellaneous small office equipment.

Physical and Mental Demands:    
•    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. 
•    The employee is frequently required to focus a high degree of attention to swimmers.
•    The employee must be able to stand for long periods of time.
•    The employee will have varying work hours, including frequent evening and weekend hours of duty.
•    The employee is frequently required to communicate with staff and others.
•    The employee is frequently required to use hands and/or fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  
•    The employee is occasionally required to walk and reach with hands and arms. 
•    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move equipment and supplies, up to 25 pounds. 
•    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:    
•    Indoor (hot, humid) and outdoor (hot, cold, wet) conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:    
•    Undergraduate coursework in recreation, park administration, leisure studies or related field.
•    Two or more years of coaching swimming.
•    Current USA Swimming Membership in good standing Which Includes:  Approved CPR/AED Certification, American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches online & in-water or a Lifeguard Certification, USA Swimming Criminal Background Check, U.S. Center for Safe Sport Athlete Protection Training, USADA Coaches Advantage Tutorial Certification,  USA Swimming Rules and Regulations Certificate, Welcome to USA Swimming Certification, USA Swimming Quality Coaching Framework Certification, USA Swimming CORE Certification. https://www.usaswimming.org/docs/default-source/membership/coach-membership-requirements.pdf 
•    ASCA certification - Level 2 preferred.
•    Valid driver’s license required.


Safety:    
•    The COHO Head Developmental Coach is responsible for being aware of and contributing to the maintenance and implementation of all Deerfield Park District safety policies and procedures.

o    Focus attention on the safety of swimmers.
o    Use good safety awareness and judgment

o    Report potentially unsafe conditions
o    Follow manufacturer safety instructions when using equipment
o    Follow agency ergonomic policies and procedures
