Job Description

The Swim Coach and Instructor plays a pivotal role in building and leading a dynamic swim team that fosters growth, teamwork, and enjoyment. This individual will be passionate about working with swimmers of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced athletes, and will develop a strong vision for an engaging and effective swim lesson program. Responsibilities include teaching swimmers of all ages proper techniques and skills, evaluating performance during practices and individual lessons, and delivering constructive feedback in a fun, supportive, and safe environment.

POSITION FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
  • Ensure the safety of swimmers and surroundings to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Design and implement appropriate lessons for the swimming level being taught that consider each swimmer’s abilities and progressive development.
  • Teach swimming techniques, swimming strokes, and water safety rules to swimmers with varying swimming abilities. 
  • Attend all swim meets, practices, and league meetings. 
  • Interact with other coaches, parents of swimmers, and league officials to coordinate White Manor Wave’s full participation at swim meets and league activities. 
  • Collaborate with country club staff and parents to communicate effectively and plan team events.
  • Implement ground rules to include swimming and water safety requirements for each swim session.
  • Assess the progress of swimmers and adjust teaching programs accordingly. 
  • Employ only those methods and teaching techniques outlined and approved by the American Red Cross.
  • Properly record team attendance daily.
  • Report all incidents, concerns, and/or feedback, complaints, emergencies, hazards, or faulty equipment to the General Manager.
  • Be knowledgeable of and comply with, at all times, the Club’s standards, policies, and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Proven experience working as a swim instructor or lifeguard required.
  • American Red Cross Basic First Aid, training on AED units, and possession of current Red Cross CPR certification (Infant, Child, Adult) required.
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) Certification required.
  • Passion and enthusiasm for teaching and working with students of all ages.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required roles in emergency situations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills including strong verbal, written, and positive interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • Requires the individual to be in the pool at every practice and swim lesson. 
  • Requires the ability to safely lift items up to 30 pounds. 
  • Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to convey information and ideas clearly.
  • Must be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately.
  • Must maintain composure and objectivity under pressure.
  • Must be effective in listening to, understanding, and clarifying the concerns and issues raised by members, guests, and team members.
  • Must be able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position.
  • Ability to project voice and get the attention of and cooperation from youngsters.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in an outdoor setting in a busy and noisy environment. Working conditions are often hot, humid, slippery, and wet. Able to tolerate the smell of chlorine and frequent exposure to cleaning agents. Varying schedule to include evenings, holidays, and extended hours as business dictates.
