Job Description

Humboldt Swim Club (HSC) has an opening for a positive, experienced and enthusiastic head coach for our year-round competitive swim team.

Humboldt Swim Club is a Zone 3, Pacific Swimming club member. HSC is a non-profit, board-governed, head-coach led swim team located in Arcata, CA. The team practices at the Arcata Community Pool, Cal Poly Humboldt University pool and HealthSPORT club. Humboldt County is within the heart of Northern California’s coastal redwood region, located about 200 miles north of San Francsico and about 50 miles to the border of Oregon. HSC is a well-established swim club that has trained athletes for the last 32 years. We are seeking the right person to lead our club into the future, while they enjoy the best of our community-oriented area. Hiking, biking, water activities and living within the beauty of our historic Redwood Forest. 

The mission of Humboldt Swim Club is to provide the youth of our community with a USA Swimming club, and to promote the sport of swimming in our area. The team currently has 135 members, from 6-18 years old.

Job duties including, but not limited to:

  • Lead athlete development and oversee all swimming and dryland programs.

  • Ensure competitive opportunities, including organizing hosted meets. Attend local and travel meets.

  • Serve as the primary coach for all groups.

  • Maintain regular communication with athletes, families, board members, and community stakeholders.

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the swim team.

  • Supervising current and training new coaches (e.g. in coaching responsibilities, mentorship, expectations, etc...)

  • Developing season training plans for all practice groups and presenting to membership and board members.

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with the latest coaching techniques.

  • Develop meet attendance schedules and enroll swimmers.

 

Required qualifications:

  • 2+ years of coaching experience with a focus on technique, race strategy, and age-appropriate training for both developmental and elite swimmers.

  • Strong analytical skills to assess swimmer performance and create tailored training sessions.

  • Current USA Swimming coach member in good standing, with relevant certifications.

  • Competitive swimming experience, preferably at the collegiate level.

  • ASCA level 2 or higher.

  • Strong leadership skills and a passion for growing a swim team in Northern California.

  • Enthusiastic, hardworking, and highly motivated team player.

  • Experience supervising and mentoring a staff of 2 or more age group coaches

  • Bachelor’s degree or an associate degree with 5+ years of lead coach and administration experience.

 

Additional Information

  • Preferred start date:  ASAP. The position will remain open until filled.

  • U.S. candidates only. We cannot provide a work visa.

  • Direct Supervisor:  Board of Directors.

  • Compensation:  Competitive salary based on experience ($45,000-$66,000/year).

  • Performance based bonuses (Goals met)

  • Work Schedule:  Full-time position.  The schedule will vary based on season and business needs.
