About Us:
Viking Swim Club (VSC) is a long-standing, non-profit, board-run swim team based in Petersburg, Alaska. The Club provides a competitive swim program for youth ages 6–18 and has been serving the community for over 50 years. Practices are held Monday through Friday from late August through May, with the potential for a summer swim program.
Position Title: Assistant Coach
Reports to: Head Coach
Employment Type: Part-time, Contractual
Location: Petersburg, Alaska
Compensation: DOE (Dependent on Experience)
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Coaching & Athlete Support
- Assist the Head Coach with the implementation of daily practices for assigned swimmer groups.
- Provide in-water and deck instruction in accordance with the training plans developed by the Head Coach.
- Encourage athlete development and promote good sportsmanship, discipline, and team values.
- Support the Head Coach in maintaining swimmer safety and proper behavior during practices and meets.
- Attend and coach at swim meets as scheduled by the Head Coach, including team warm-ups, cool-downs, and on-deck management.
- Assist with swimmer event selection and preparation, as directed.
- Maintain a professional and supportive presence on deck at all times.
Team Support & Communication
- Participate in regular staff meetings as scheduled by the Head Coach.
- Communicate promptly and clearly with the Head Coach regarding scheduling, swimmer needs, or concerns.
- Maintain positive and respectful communication with swimmers, parents, and fellow coaches.
- Assist in communicating meet information and updates to swimmers and parents when needed.
Administrative Support
- Take attendance and track swimmer progress using the Club’s designated platform (e.g., SportsEngine).
- Support meet registration preparation as directed by the Head Coach.
- Assist with the execution of club events, clinics, or tryouts as needed.
Qualifications:
- Current or eligible for USA Swimming Coach Membership
- CPR, First Aid, Safety Training for Swim Coaches (STSC), and Background Check (or ability to obtain before employment)
- Experience working with youth in swim, or a sports or educational setting preferred
- Knowledge of swimming technique, stroke development, and competitive swim training
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends, including occasional travel to meets
Employment Details:
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and required certifications.
- Assistant Coaches are at-will employees of Viking Swim Club.
- This position does not carry a seat on the Board of Directors.
