About

Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club (SMAC), based in Waynesville, North Carolina, is seeking applications for the position of part-time Assistant Coach. We are a non-profit program that is run by a volunteer parent board which meets each month. As a member of our coaching staff, you will be asked to foster positive relationships and communicate well with swim team members, parents and coworkers. SMAC offers competitive hourly compensation based on qualifications. This role involves coaching swimmers aged 5 to 18, supervising assistant coaches, and collaborating with a parent-run board of directors to lead the team. A typical week will include approximately 16 hours of on-deck coaching and 5 hours of administrative duties.

Qualifications 

  • Prior club/collegiate swimming participation and/or coaching experience required

Responsibilities

  • This position is primarily responsible for instructing athletes of varying ability levels, ages 5-18

  • Reporting directly to the board and head coach of Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club, the Assistant Coach will coordinate and manage various aspects of the swimming program, including planning and executing practice sessions, assisting in competitions, and organization of home meets

  • The role requires a commitment to USA Swimming compliance, including Safe Sport, Coaching Credentials, Lifeguard and CPR certifications within the first 30 days of acceptance

  • In addition to coaching responsibilities, the Assistant Coach will engage in team building activities, establishing relationships with all swimmers, coaches, and board members to meet the team's objectives

  • The position also involves attending monthly staff meetings, assisting in the development of team rules and policies, and supervising swimmers

  • The role demands professionalism, responsibility, and a commitment to the well-being of athletes

  • The position requires flexibility, as nights, weekends, and travel are integral to fulfilling the job duties

  • The Assistant Coach may oversee the success of Smoky Mountain Salamanders, the summer swim team, from May through July

  • Overall, the Assistant Coach is expected to contribute positively to the team's culture and mission of fostering growth and success for our team and athletes

  • The position may require other responsibilities, in addition to those listed, as directed by head coach and board of directors
