HOURS: Monday: 2:00-7:00, Tuesday: 3:00-7:00, Wednesday: 3:00-6:00, Thursday: 3:00-7:00, Friday: 2:00-7:00
               Some weekends as needed for Swim Meets

JOB SUMMARY

The aquatics facility is used for recreational swimming and playing, lap swimming, and other special programs throughout the year. Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director and Head Coach, this position assists with daily duties and operations. Under administrative direction this employee actively assists in coaching and supervising all aquatics programs within the City of Orange Beach’s swim team (OBST).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists staff with daily operations of the Aquatics Center.
  • Contributes to development and implementation of workouts for age group swimmers.
  • Assists in organizing and overseeing all levels of OBST, especially blue group (8&U) and orange group (10&U).
  • Co-monitors program registrations, participant records, and maintain an open-door policy between parent/legal guardian communications.
  • Acquires USA Swimming Core Coach certification and maintain in good standing with annual requirements.
  • Provides input on swim meet entries regarding blue and orange age group swimmers.
  • Attends and assists running all swim meets as needed.
  • Knows and follows all local league (Gulf Coast Area Aquatic League) policies and procedures.
  • Recognizes and responds effectively to emergencies.
  • Enforces all city and health department ordinances pertaining to the Aquatics Center to include pool safety ordinances.
  • Observes and supervises the activities of swim team participants; monitors weather conditions; identifies potential dangers and takes effective action.
  • Initiates or assists with the rescue of patrons in the Aquatics Center and/or in the water; administers first aid or lifesaving techniques as indicated, provides basic life support care and treatment of sick and injured persons, uses rescue equipment and dispatches emergency personnel.
  • Assists with control of the scene and non-injured persons.
  • Maintains and completes reports and forms associated with incidents and injuries.
  • Attends mandatory aquatic staff meetings and in-service training sessions, maintains current professional certifications as required.
  • Maintains a positive rapport and image with the public.
  • Reports any difficulties, complaints, accidents, and damages to the Aquatics Director.
  • Makes decisions regarding unsafe activities that may lead to injury to all swim team participants.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information effectively to large groups of adults including children in both instructional and non-instructional settings.
  • Ability to make mature judgments and carry out job assignments while under stress.
  • Ability to work with people of all ages, specifically 5-18.
  • Complete knowledge of competitive swimming strokes, starts, turns, race strategy, practice strategy, and swimmer development, basic understanding of overall aquatics program.
  • Ability to assist and anticipate needs of the OBST coaching staff, be a team player, and foster a teamwork environment.
  • Ability and willingness to learn Hy-Tek software, Colorado Timing Systems, and other technology OBST utilizes regarding the sport.
  • Willing to accept direction and supervision.
  • Ability to work independently when necessary.
  • Strong commitment and ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Research skills, including use of the internet and other resources.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.
  • Decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in all techniques and systems for the assurance of participant and employee safety, lifeguarding principles, and emergency actions required for the health and well-being of swimmers and other patrons of the pool.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License with vessel endorsement.
  • Willing to work overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and other non-standard hours when necessary.
  • At least 2 years’ competitive swimming coaching experience. A background of training as a USA Swimming athlete is preferred.
  • Participates in coach development and member relations.
  • Must be aware of USA Swimming competitive movement and trends in the aquatic field and must continue to enhance his/her knowledge of the USA Swimming competitive movement.
  • A year of experience as a lifeguard is preferred.
  • If not already acquired, complete USA Swimming Core Coach certification and registrations as required annually to be in and remain in good standing. Required current certifications include:
    1. Safety Training for Swim Coaches
    2. ARC Lifeguard
    3. Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – Adult, Infant, Child
    4. First-aid
    5. Must have a current phone number and e-mail address where you can be contacted.
    6. Must be a minimum of 19 years of age or older.
    7. H.S. Diploma/GED required, college preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work involves moderate risk or discomforts, which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around or with moving vehicles, possible contagious diseases and dangerous surf. Employees may be required to use protective clothing and work outside in extreme conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires frequent physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or similar activities, recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above average swimming ability, agility, dexterity and strength.
