The Huron Valley Penguins is a year-round USA Swimming Club, operated by the Huron Valley School District.  We strive to offer our participants excellent training to improve their technique, endurance, and speed. We work to provide a well-rounded program that encourages the athlete to reach their goals through practice, education, competition, and having fun! Under the direction of the Aquatics and Programming Manager and Huron Valley Recreation and Education, The Head Swim Coach is the leader who facilitates all operations of the team. Planning of practices, meets, and team functions is essential to this position.


Preferred Qualifications:

·         USA/Michigan Swimming Coach in good standing

·         ASCA Coach In Good Standing

·         American Red Cross Lifeguard Certified

·         Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification

·         Previous Experience as Head Coach/Assistant Coach/personal achievement in competitive swimming

·         Must be able to pass a background check- employable with Edustaff and Huron Valley Schools



·         Ensures proper supervision of all swimmers at all times. Monitors practices and makes corrections as needed

·         Works with Lifeguards and pool staff to correct any behaviors or hazards, and respond to emergencies

·         Attend any required in-service trainings, ensure certifications of all coaches are up to date

·         Observes all Huron Valley District, Edustaff, and USA Swimming conduct and protocols. Strive to provide physical safety as well as emotional well-being of participants

·         Must comply with all social media, anti-bullying, Safe Sport,  reporting best practices

·         Works to prevent swimming related injury and help swimmers exercise safely during/after recovery

·         Ability to lead/supervise dry land training. Maintain safe use of equipment and proper form by participants



Supervising Coaches and Swimmers

·         Scheduling shifts for practices and meets, approving timecards and payroll

  • Ensuring Coaches are delivering quality practices, supervising swimmers, giving consistent, appropriate, feedback often, encouraging and motivating all individuals on the team
  •  Work to develop coaching skills to teach proper stroke fundamentals while examining individual fitness needs and goals


Interpersonal Skills

·         Must be energetic, enthusiastic and have a motivational personality that enjoys working with children and adults of all ages. Shows empathy and encouragement to individuals.  

·         Act as an ambassador of the team, Huron Valley Pools and Fitness, Rec and Ed, and HV Schools

·         Provide excellent, consistent, and positive communication to staff, swimmers, families, and volunteers. Always maintain discretion and professionalism

·         Work daily to nurture the potential of youth and teens; help people improve their well-being; and provide opportunities to improve the lives of families through swim team experiences

·         Promote the mission of the Huron Valley Rec and Ed Department- Inspiring and Building Futures, One experience at a time. We change lives!




·         Adhere to District finance/accounting/cash handling policies at all times

·         Work with Management to plan for expenditures. Turn in requests with required lead time

·         Utilize budget responsibly and ethically. Maintain transparency at all times

·         Make efforts to cut costs where appropriate

·         Generate revenue when possible.  Host fundraising meets and other events



Other Required Skills and Abilities

·         Experience/aptitude in managing meet entries, meet packets, compliance with MI Swimming procedures, representation at MI Swimming meetings as needed

·         Experience with or willingness to learn Team Unify, Hy-Tek Software, Colorado timing equipment, Microsoft Office Products and Google Drive

·         Ability to learn HVS timeclock software, other software programs as needed

·         Driver’s license and automobile for travel. (required)

·         Attend Meetings as needed with Parents, Board, Pools and Fitness Staff, Management, HV Administration, etc.

·         Ability to move equipment for swim meet set up or as otherwise required
