AQUATICS LIFEGUARD & SAFETY COORDINATOR
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and within the policies established by the Wallingford Family YMCA, the Aquatics Lifeguard & Safety Coordinator is responsible for planning and delivering of Lifeguard in-service trainings, conducting staff evaluations, and weekly scheduling for lifeguard staff. The Aquatics Lifeguard & Safety Coordinator will supervise Lifeguard staff ensure the highest quality and safety for all members and program participants. Weekend and daytime hours required in coordination with the Director. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Uphold and exemplify high standards of customer service. Assist in recruitment, training, development, and evaluation of aquatics staff.  Coordinate substitute procedures for staff; record all changes and maintain up-to-date staff schedule. Be accountable for coverage of all assigned lifeguard shifts.  Supervise aquatic staff in the absence of the Aquatics Director. Ensure records of staff certification are current and complete. Guard and/or teach in the absence of a scheduled lifeguard or swim instructor as necessary. Provide direct service as a lifeguard and/or swim instructor as needed. Assist with leadership at all lifeguard/swim instructor in-service trainings and meetings, including evaluations of swim instructors. Coordinate and schedule lifeguard shifts. Be professional, courteous, alert and diplomatic.  Guard all swimmers; eliminate unsafe practices and physical hazards Maintain general pool rules Administer proper first aid and carry out emergency procedures in the event of an accident Participate as a part of the Aquatics staff team in providing a safe and enjoyable environment Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information.  Answer questions and explain aquatics programs to the public, including answering emails, voicemails, and in-person inquiries.  Provide training and guidance to new lifeguard staff. Assist with evaluation of lifeguard staff for Initial Reviews (within the first 90 days) Work the opening pool shift at least 3 mornings per week Keep informed of all changes in the schedule and upcoming events Gather information and prepare reports as directed.  Participate on at least one committee within the YMCA or community.  Create and run at minimum one Aquatic Safety & Awareness event per year.  Participate in and/or volunteer for at least one Community Support Campaign event per year. Inspect and ensure high standards of maintenance, cleanliness, and repair of aquatic equipment and supplies, including first aid supplies.  Test and manage pools in accordance with Wallingford Family YMCA policies and guidelines, including, but not limited to, chemical levels and emergency situations. All other duties as assigned by supervisor QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of 2 years of experience working in the Aquatics field Current Lifeguarding Certification and CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications required YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification, Pool Operator Certification, Lifeguard Management Certification within 6 months of hire Red Cross Lifeguard Trainer Certification preferred Additional training must be completed as required by the State and/or Federal Government. Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation or a related field preferred Good communication skills; Leadership skills are imperative.  Must be 21 years or older.  Must exhibit the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of work with the YMCA.  WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Head Swim Team Coach
Job Title:  SWIM TEAM HEAD COACH Status: PART TIME Department: AQUATICS Reports to: SENIOR DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP & WELLNESS Hourly Rate: $16 to $18 per hour POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Senior Director of Membership & Wellness, the Swim Team Head Coach is responsible for organizing and conducting practices, clinics, meets and other events for the Wallingford Family YMCA Dolphins Swim Team.  This team is sponsored by the Wallingford Family YMCA and participates in the Yankee Cluster Swim League. This program is conducted in accordance with the missions and policies of the Wallingford Family YMCA, the YMCA of the USA, and USA Swimming.   This is a part-time position, not to exceed 40 hours per week. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Contribute to and supervise the fulfillment of the YMCA Mission and character development values through the Wallingford Family YMCA Dolphins Swim Team program. Under the direction of the Senior Director of Membership & Wellness, will assist in recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, motivating and evaluating swim team staff, as well as taking disciplinary action up to and including termination as needed. Recruit and oversee the Parent’s Association volunteers, attend monthly Parent Association meetings or arrange a coach representative. Assure that monthly all-parent meetings are held (this can include the spring banquet) where parents vote on Association budget and membership and any other business. Encourage recruitment of swimmers through YMCA swim lesson programs as well as other YMCA youth programs in collaboration with the Senior Director of Membership & Wellness and the Aquatics Director. Develop and maintain a recordkeeping system of the status and progress of each swimmer. In conjunction with the assistant swim coaches, prepare all meet entries assuring that every child swims in every meet they attend. Develop a schedule for swim team practices across multiple facilities, and develop competitive swim clinics each year. Update, maintain, and distribute the Dolphin Swim Team handbook. Communicate regularly with Senior Director of Membership & Wellness and with all coaches. Maintain communication and rapport with all swimmers and their parents. Demonstrate an enthusiastic attitude towards the team and provide a positive learning environment for all. Oversee the Dolphins website and other social media and ensure that it is kept up to date. Assist in the preparation of an annual budget under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Director of Membership & Wellness, and manage that budget for the Dolphins Swim Team program in accordance with established procedures and expectations. Represent the Wallingford Family YMCA at YMCA regional events and trainings. Assist with the evaluation and improvement of the swim team program.  Assist with the creation of new programs and new collaborations. Evaluate all programs annually to ensure they meet the needs of program participants. Continue to develop and evaluate the USA Swimming program as part of the Dolphins Swim program. Report any facility problems, needed repairs to the Facility Director following the work order procedure. Keep current with swim coaching techniques and issues. Membership in ASCA recommended. Keep all certifications current and monitor coaching staff to ensure their certifications are also kept current.  All other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of Lifeguarding (YMCA or ARC) and CPR/AED/AEO is required.   Coaching certifications from YMCA of the USA and USA Swimming. Certification from ASCA is preferred.  Two to four years competitive coaching experience is required.   Two years Head Coach preferred. Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to communicate recognized principles and practices of coaching young swimmers.   Demonstrated ability to build a team of quality coaches. Great communication skills a must as well as supervision and public relations skills.   Sexual harassment training must be obtained within 6 months.  Additional certifications preferred: Lifeguard Management, WSI and/or Y Swim Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, and Pool Operator. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.  Must be able to work for extended periods of time in an aquatics environment. Safety is the responsibility of every employee of the YMCA.
