When Penguin Swimming began it competitive age group swim program in 1998, the team promptly attracted notice. In its first season, team members established coveted National Top 16 times in both individual and relay events. Since that time, the success (link to Team Records) of Penguin Swimming has continued. Two former Penguin Swimmers established Olympic Swim Team trial time cuts. At the Ohio High School State Championships, Penguin swimmers have won several state championship titles and have placed numerous times in the top 16 of the state. Our swimmers have successfully participated at US Nationals and sectional meets. Many Penguin swimmers have claimed championship titles at both the long course and short course championship meets sponsored by Lake Erie Swimming.
Jackie Bak Yost, a former Penguin Swim coach, served as a member of the US Olympic Swim Team staff at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Many Penguin team members have continued their swimming careers at colleges such as Notre Dame, University of Texas, Ohio State University, Youngstown State University, Mount Union, Dennison, and Westminster College.
Penguin Swimming competes in USA Swimming competitions. The team is comprised of swimmers from 5 to 18 years old. The swim season consists of a short course program that runs from September through March and a long course season that runs from April through August.
We are fortunate to use Beeghly Natatorium at Youngstown State University for team practices. Beeghly is the finest competitive swimming facility in the area with both long and short course capabilities.
