The Lifeguard is to oversee the safety of member and program participants of the pool areas. The Lifeguard is also responsible for informing and serving YMCA members and volunteers in a premier fashion. He or she is expected to emphasize member service, character development, the mission statement and to work with membership retention and promotion. Leaders who enforce pool rules: Receive Free training and certification (a $250 value) Receive Free YMCA membership to all YMCA gyms Work flexible schedules Receive opportunities for career advancement Responsibilities Models the core values of Caring, Honest, Respect and Responsibility; implements character development and the YMCA core values in all programs and all aspects of center operations. Continuously scan the pool (every 10 seconds), whirlpool and sauna areas, checking for safe conditions. Must maintain high level of alertness at all times. Staff may be videotaped for safety audit purposes and ongoing training. Will be required to complete 2 hours of in-service training a month. Position may require environment changes (outdoor to indoor, humid environments). Will be required to participate in ongoing training that will be held during operational hours (operational manikin drops, pool safety checks, CPR checks). Enforce all posted rules and any other rules that are required to ensure the safety of all participants. Must constantly watch the pool and have a rescue tube, whistle, emergency button, and supplemental oxygen barrier mask ready and available at all times, actively scanning 10 x 10. Lifeguard is not to do secondary duties in place of scanning their zone of protection. Make sure that the pool deck is free of clutter and perform all maintenance duties assigned by Aquatic Director. Test pool chemical levels and report changes to Aquatics Director immediately. Fill out all Y accident and incident reports completely and turn into the Aquatics Director. Responsible for opening and closing procedures. Responsible for maintaining the continuity of lap swim and moving participants accordingly. Must be able to be a team player with all staff. Must notify appropriate staff of any unsafe conditions, needed repairs, complaints, accidents, or injuries immediately. Must participate in special events within the Aquatics Department and may include events facility-wide. Must participate in events benefiting the Annual Mission campaign.  Qualifications Must be 16 years of age. Tread water for 2 minutes, no hands Swim 250 yards without stopping using a variety of specific strokes Swim to the bottom of a 9-12 foot pool. Sprint 25 yards, retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool, tread water with the object for 1 minute, climb out of the pool without using a ladder or other assistance. Perform 100 chest compressions on a mannequin. Able to relate and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with the mission, character development and values of the YMCA, the Swim Instructor will teach quality lessons to participants concentrating on the YMCA’s five areas of growth; personal safety, stroke development, water safety and rescue, personal growth, and water sports and games. Swim Instructor is expected to emphasize member service, character development, the mission statement, and to work with membership retention and promotion. Responsibilities Contribute to the overall YMCA mission of healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.  Enforce all posted rules and any other rules that are required to ensure the safety of all participants. Teach swim lessons to participants at appropriate age levels, per national guidelines of course levels and ratios. Plan lessons for classes, be well prepared for lesson. Responsible for set up and tear down of lessons (includes all utilized equipment). Take attendance at all classes. Responsible for updating all areas and certifications through the YMCA training certification program as needed for position. Responsible to assist in the cleanliness of the pool and reporting any maintenance needs. Be a team player with all staff. Must participate in the annual mission campaign as assigned. May be asked to participate in special events within the Aquatics Department and throughout the facility. Qualifications Must be 16 years of age. American Safety and Health Institute certifications: Current First Aid. Current CPRPro (includes AED). Current Emergency Oxygen. YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor. The YMCA of Greater Kansas City is seeking an Aquatics Director to work at our Paul Henson YMCA. This position will receive direction from the Executive Director. The Aquatics Director is responsible and accountable for all aspects of the aquatics department at the appointed location. The Aquatics Director is expected to emphasize a high level of risk management, member service, character development and the mission in retention and promotion of the Y. Responsibilities Develops the annual operating objectives and plans assigned program responsibilities. Monitors the achievement of these objectives and exercises appropriate action to assure achievement of the objectives. Prepares the annual income and expense budget for the Aquatic Department and assigned area responsibility administers the budget and exercises necessary controls to assure operations are carried out in a balanced fiscal position. Design and maintain a diverse schedule of revenue generating activities, classes and programs for all members and participants of all abilities and levels. Responsible for overseeing pool maintenance, operation: including chemical checks, cleaning, permits, etc. Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations. Able to perform duties of lifeguard, water fitness instructor, swim coach or swim lesson instructor as stated in corresponding job descriptions. Conduct lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid, CPR, and Administering Emergency Oxygen trainings based on current certifications. Be responsible for injury/accident reporting procedures. Serve as a Risk Management Specialist at your center, including the development and supervision of departmental Emergency Action Plan. Must notify appropriate staff of any unsafe conditions, needed repairs, complaints, accidents, or injuries immediately. Champion Aquatics program quality promises Responsible for entire human resource cycle of all aquatic staff (recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate), including current knowledge of all areas of training and certifications as well as YMCA of Greater Kansas City associate handbook. Attend community functions and events to promote the Y, its mission and programs. Must provide direction and lead all staff at your center including the coordination and facilitation of regular in-service staff meetings. Assist in YMCA fund raising activities and special events including the accomplishment of all departmental Annual Mission campaign goals. Attendance of Community Mission Board meetings as deemed necessary by supervisor. Develop and implement retention and sale initiatives for all aquatics programs and members. Insure all program operation is consistent with association procedures, including emergency, insurance, accident, purchasing, and personnel and accounting systems. Develop policies and procedures for specific program efforts as needed. Participates as a member of a total team in the responsibility for the administration, promotion and operation of the appropriate center activity participants accordingly in such projects as assigned, as well as staff training’s and meetings, core program teams and special events. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or the equivalent education experience in management. Minimum of three years experience in aquatics or a related field. Preferred three years experience in Aquatics management Preferred American Safety and Health Institute certifications:Current CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certification from National Organization First Aid CPRPro (includes AED) Emergency Oxygen Preferred YMCA Lifeguard 2011 (5th ed YLG) Current Lifeguard certification from a National Organization Preferred Lifeguard Instructor certification from National organization Certified Pool Operator (may not be required at all locations) Perform and pass rescue skills.
