About the Atherton Swim Team

The Atherton Swim Team is a new, non-profit, parent-run organization dedicated to providing a positive and supportive environment for young swimmers in our community. Based in the beautiful Atherton neighborhood, our inaugural season is set to launch in May 2026. We are seeking an energetic, courteous, and experienced Head Coach to help us build a strong team culture from the ground up, establish lasting traditions, and create a fun and successful program for all swimmers. We are seeking an individual that is looking to begin a relationship with our swimmers and families that will last multiple seasons.

Position Summary

The Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of the swim team's program, including the development of our swimmers, creating practice plans, and managing meets. This is a unique opportunity to build a brand new team and shape its identity from day one.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coaching & Instruction:

  • Plan and lead daily swim practices, focusing on all of the 4 competitive stroke techniques, turns, and endurance. 

    • He or She will be expected to attend all practices, meets, time trials and training sessions.

    • He or She will also be responsible for setting up and taking down the pool for practice.

  • Provide individual feedback and guidance to swimmers of all ages and skill levels.

  • Teach and enforce safe diving and starting techniques, including feet-first entries, given the pool's 5 foot max depth.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive team environment. Responsible for building a program that creates team loyalty through team spirit and sportsmanship, where swimmers look forward to returning each summer.

  • Team Development & Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to establish team values and traditions.

  • Assist in the recruitment and supervision of assistant coaches and junior coaches.

  • Be a visible leader and positive role model for all swimmers, parents, and volunteers.

  • Meet Management:

  • Manage all aspects of home and away meets, including athlete entries and event lineup creation.

  • Communicate with officials and opposing coaches.

  • Ensure all meets are run safely and efficiently.

  • Communication & Administration:

  • Communicate regularly with the Board of Directors regarding team progress and challenges.

  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with swimmers and parents.

  • Assist in the preparation of the team budget and manage coaching-related expenses.

  • Maintain the team roster, tracking times and generate heat sheets.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Previous experience as a swim coach, preferably as a head coach or lead assistant. Ability to teach and demonstrate proper stroke technique.

  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguarding is required.

  • Current USA Swimming Coach Membership or equivalent certification is a plus.

  • A passion for working with children of different ages and abilities and a commitment to creating a fun, team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and weekends during the swim season.

  • A strong understanding of stroke mechanics and a commitment to swimmer safety.

  • Serve as a role model in and out of the pool.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, parents, coaching staff, League officials and other coaches.

  • Ability to lead, guide, and mentor assistant coaches.
