About Long Lake Camp for the Arts

Established in 1969, Long Lake Camp for the Arts is a world-renowned, family-owned creative summer camp nestled in the beautiful Adirondack Park of New York. We specialize in a unique, "100% free choice" philosophy, empowering campers aged 8 to 16 to design their own daily schedules spanning theater, music, fine arts, dance, circus, and traditional camp recreation. Our community thrives on personal growth, immense creativity, and a welcoming, non-competitive atmosphere.

Position Overview

We are seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and safety-conscious individuals to join our waterfront staff as a dual-role Lifeguard and Boat Driver Counselor. In this position, you get the best of both worlds: spending your days out on a stunning Adirondack lake and living in a cabin as a mentor, leader, and guide to a group of creative campers.

Our beautiful lakefront provides campers with a much-needed retreat to relax, unwind, and have fun away from their rigorous artistic rehearsals. Whether you are driving our ski boats, pulling tubing enthusiasts, or keeping watch from the dock, you will directly shape a safe, joyful summer for our camp community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Waterfront Safety & Lifeguarding: Actively monitor designated swimming and boating zones to ensure 100% safety for all campers and staff. Maintain peak alertness and enforce waterfront regulations.

  • Boat Driving & Water Sports: Safely pilot camp motorboats for activities like tubing, water skiing, and scenic lake tours. Conduct daily safety checks and ensure life vests are fitted properly for all passengers.

  • Cabin Counseling: Live in a cabin with a small group of campers. Foster an inclusive, supportive, and fun living environment, guiding them through daily routines, meals, and evening bonding activities.

  • Waterfront Maintenance: Help care for and store equipment including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, life jackets, oars, and motorboats. Keep the beach and dock areas pristine and hazard-free.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must be at least 20 years old by the start of camp.

  • Current, valid Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent) or a willingness to complete certification prior to the summer is prefered but we can train and recertify you at camp.

  • Experience operating motorboats is highly preferred, but on-site training and New York State boating safety certifications will be facilitated.

  • Strong communication skills and a genuine passion for working with youth.

  • A positive, flexible attitude and a team-player mentality.

Perks & Living on Camp

  • Zero Living Expenses: Because your room, board, meals, and laundry are completely covered for the entire summer, you can save 100% of your paycheck!

  • Creative Community: When off-duty, enjoy incredible evening staff shows, theater productions, gallery openings, and a deeply inspiring community of artists from all over the world.

  • Outdoor Adventure: Gain unlimited access to hiking trails, lakes, and the spectacular natural landscape of the Adirondack high peaks during your time off.
