Position Title: Assistant Coach
Club: Mid-Michigan Aquatics Hurricanes (MMA)
Location: Dewitt, Okemos, and/or Holt Michigan
Reports To: Head Coach
MMA is a year-round USA Swimming–affiliated competitive swim team providing high-quality professional coaching and technique instruction for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Recognized as a 2019 Bronze Medal Club in USA Swimming’s Club Excellence Program, MMA is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors. We serve approximately 250 swimmers, ages 6 to 20, across three training locations.
The Assistant Coach works collaboratively with the Head Coach to support the year-round USA Swimming program. The Assistant Coach is responsible for coaching swimmers, providing technique instruction, and fostering a positive and safe team environment. This role requires strong communication skills to engage effectively with coaching staff, athletes, and parents.
Assistant Coach Roles and Responsibilities:
Assist the Head Coach and Head Assistant Coach in coaching all levels of the USA Swimming program, from beginners to advanced swimmers
Support implementation of training plans and practice schedules for assigned training groups
Supervise swimmers during practices to ensure safety and effective training
Provide instruction and feedback on swim techniques and training efforts
Monitor swimmers’ progress and assist with goal setting appropriate to age and ability
Communicate regularly and professionally with parents, swimmers, and coaching staff
Enforce the swimmer Code of Conduct as outlined in the MMA Handbook
Promote a positive team culture that encourages self-discipline, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility
Attend all scheduled practices and swim meets, including weekends as required
Participate in team-sponsored events and represent MMA positively within the community
Duties:
Attend daily practices punctually and consistently
Assist with swimmer supervision in the pool and on the deck at all times
Support meet entries and logistics as directed by senior coaching staff
Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized training environment
Engage with swimmers, parents, and team members to foster a welcoming atmosphere
Requirements:
Current certification in Adult and Pediatric/Child CPR and AED (must obtain prior to coaching on deck)
USA Swimming Coach certification (Level 1 preferred, or willingness to obtain)
Knowledgeable of competitive USA Swimming rules and stroke techniques (Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle)
Passionate about swimming and working with youth of all abilities
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work under the guidance of Head Coach
Working knowledge of Meet Manager software is preferred
Minimum of 2 years coaching experience at the club or collegiate level preferred
Availability:
Available to coach Monday through Friday, including one or more training groups
Willingness to work weekends for swim meets and travel as needed (mileage and lodging reimbursement provided)
Licenses/Certifications:
USA Swimming Coach certification (preferred)
Current Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (required)
