SUMMARY
This position is responsible for planning, managing, and directing the swim team at the Wellmark YMCA and for ensuring the safety of participants. This position will need to coach, lead and motivate athletes in practice groups and at meets, promoting improvement and growth. In addition, this full-time position’s off-deck responsibilities will include administrative and operational tasks vital to team management, growth and culture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Hire, supervise, train and direct assistant coaches.
- In conjunction with the supervisor, prepare season training plans / themes / focus and develop team events.
- Plan, write, schedule, and direct all team practices and meets.
- Maintain proper records, team lists, and reports as needed.
- Address member concerns by appointments and/or phone conversations.
- Relate to individual members on a professional basis at all times.
- Monitor and maintain equipment.
- Ensure safety of participants by enforcing policies and disciplinary rules.
- Report specific problems or needs to the supervisor or designated staff person.
- Create an environment that welcomes all types of swimmers from varying levels and backgrounds
- Communicate with the team and staff information regarding team activities, meets, goals and daily training plans/themes
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.
- Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions
- Completion of high school or equivalent
- Two years of competitive coaching experience
- Working knowledge of competitive teams
- Demonstrated computer skills in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office environment
- American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches (Lifeguard certification will be accepted with proof of successful completion of the online Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification)
- YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving
- Registered USA Swimming Coach or obtained in the first 30 days if hired
- Current Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Certification OR equivalent – prior to starting.
- Child Abuse Prevention Training - prior to starting if hired
- Additional training to be completed within the first 30+ days and maintained afterwards.
