Position Overview
The Head Developmental Coach is a key leader in The Woodlands Swim Team coaching staff, responsible for the development, oversight, and daily operation of the developmental program (typically 10 and under). This includes designing and implementing training progressions, supervising and mentoring developmental-level coaches, and ensuring consistency and quality of instruction across all pre-competitive and developmental training groups. The role focuses on introducing athletes to the sport of swimming, instilling a love for the sport, teaching fundamental skills, and preparing swimmers for advancement into higher training groups.
The Head Developmental Coach is responsible for designing and implementing technical and training standards for the levels, mentoring assistant coaches, and promoting consistency, professionalism, and excellence across all developmental groups. The Head Developmental Coach plays a pivotal role in athlete retention, family engagement, and long-term program success, as the developmental program is the foundation of the club’s athlete pipeline.

Program Leadership & Oversight
- Oversee all aspects of the Foundations/Developmental Program, including group structure, curriculum design, and seasonal planning.
- Establish a clear developmental pathway aligned with the club’s long-term athlete development model.
- Ensure training plans emphasize skill acquisition, fun, fundamentals, and age-appropriate conditioning.
- Coordinate group placement decisions in collaboration with the Head Coach/Associate Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach.
- Set group expectations, policies, and culture consistent with team philosophy.
Coaching & Athlete Development
- Serve as the lead coach for a primary 10 & Under training group.
- Provide direct technical instruction, fostering strong foundations in stroke mechanics, starts, turns, and racing skills.
- Instill positive values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, and discipline.
- Monitor and track swimmer progress, ensuring readiness for advancement to higher levels.
- Attend meets regularly to coach, support, and mentor developmental athletes.
- Emphasize fun and excitement in training to drive long-term retention and love of the sport.
Staff Leadership & Mentorship
- Supervise and mentor assistant coaches assigned to Developmental training groups.
- Provide guidance, feedback, and training for developmental staff to ensure consistency in instruction and philosophy.
- Lead periodic coach meetings to align teaching strategies, progressions, and group expectations.
- Assist the Head Age Group Coach in onboarding and training new developmental-level staff.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain seasonal training plans, meet schedules, and group goals for Developmental program athletes.
- Collaborate with the Head Coach and team administrator to manage rosters, practice schedules, and facility needs for developmental groups.
- Communicate regularly with parents of Developmental athletes, providing group updates, swimmer progress feedback, and developmental education.
- Coordinate with the General Manager (or designated staff) on registration processes, group assignments, and athlete evaluations.
- Track swimmer attendance, retention rates, and advancement statistics for program evaluation.
Meet Participation & Operations
- Plan and attend targeted meets appropriate for developmental athletes.
- Ensure swimmers and families are well-prepared for competition (meet entries, expectations, team gear, etc.).
- Provide on-deck support, feedback, and supervision during warm-ups and races.
- Collaborate with the Meet Director to ensure meet formats and opportunities align with developmental needs (e.g., shorter sessions, novice events).
Parent & Community Engagement
- Build positive and professional relationships with parents of developmental athletes.
- Conduct seasonal parent meetings for Developmental groups to explain group philosophy, goals, and expectations.
- Provide resources to families on swimmer progression, nutrition basics, meet preparation, and long-term development in the sport.
- Represent the club in community outreach efforts related to learn-to-swim and entry-level swimming opportunities.
Safe Sport & Compliance
- Maintain current USA Swimming Coach Membership, including CPR, Safety Training, Athlete Protection Training, and Background Check.
- Uphold USA Swimming Safe Sport standards.
- Ensure all staff and athletes in developmental programs follow safety, supervision, and behavior guidelines.
Key Working Relationships
- Head Coach: Collaborates on long-term athlete development and coaching philosophy.
- Head Age Group Coach: Coordinates transitions from developmental to age group programming.
- Developmental Staff Coaches: Directly supervises and mentors.
- Business Manager/Administrator: Works with on rosters, registration, scheduling, and communication logistics.
- Parents & Families: Provides education and consistent communication.
Decision-Making Authority
The Head Developmental Coach is empowered to:
- Design and implement training plans for all Developmental Level Groups
- Recommend group placement and advancement decisions.
- Recruit, train, and mentor developmental staff.
- Select developmental-focused meets and events in consultation with the Head Age Group Coach.
Final decisions regarding budget, staffing levels, and major program structure changes rest with the Head Coach.
