Job Description
The Assistant Swim Coach and Lead Age Group Coach is a full-time position. Responsibilities include managing, leading and developing athletes for a specific age group(s) and when needed, working with other age groups. This position requires the coach to write and implement workouts appropriate for age, ability and training cycles. Workouts need to emphasize safety and technique in and out of the water. The Lead Age Group Coach must be highly motivated, open-minded and hardworking; attend all swim meets; implement the sprint training philosophy, be available for set up and take down at home meets; use a collaborative approach with the coaching staff; complete administrative tasks; and be a great role model to young athletes while inspiring them to be the best they can be.
Key Responsibilities
Write, plan and execute high-quality workouts for improving swimmers’ technique and fitness levels for assigned practice groups.
Teach and train proper stroke and dryland techniques for swimmers from developmental to intermediate levels.
Implement the Summer League program including, but not limited to marketing; communication with the Head Swim Coach and parents; training part-time assistant coaches; schedule, supervise and coach splash meets; administrative tasks; develop a 6-week training plan
Assist in coaching other training groups.
Attend meetings, attend all team functions (party, banquet, special practices); collaborate with the coaching staff to ensure consistency in philosophy, training and race strategies.
Attend swim meets; provide coaching and concise feedback to swimmers.
Assist in set up and break down of home swim meets.
Assist head coach in development of onboarding processes; standard operating procedures; bring improvement ideas to team meetings; run the team Instagram account.
Communicate professionally with swimmers, parents, and other coaches through multiple channels, (i.e. conversations; meetings with parents; phone calls; emails; text; BAND app). Keep a record of those communications.
Complete, implement and manage administrative tasks assigned by the Head Coach within given deadlines.
Comply with all safety and risk management policies and procedures of the Valley of the Sun J and J Swim Club.
Participate in workshops, seminars, and training to enhance professional growth.
This is a Full-Time position with a 90-day probationary period.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
A minimum of 2 years’ experience coaching age group swimmers
Competitive swimming experience at the club or collegiate level
Passionate, enthusiastic and engaging coaching style
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite programs, Google Workspace and Sports Engine
Social media and marketing experience preferred, but not required
Experience in administration or management preferred, but not required
Strong leadership and communication skills
Ability to remain calm and focused in high-stress situations
Knowledge of emergency response procedures
Minimum age of 18
Background Check for employees over 18 shall be subject to pre-employment
Educational Requirements
High school diploma
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, or related field preferred, but not required.
Provide a USA Swimming Coach Member Card documenting required certifications. These include but are not limited to CPR/AED training; Water Safety for Swim Coaches In-Water & Online; Athlete Protection; Concussion Protocol Training; Background check; Coaches Advantage Tutorial by USAVA. Other training may be requested by the Head Coach.
Physical Requirements
Hours: 40+ hours/week
Able to work in an outdoor pool facility in summer and winter conditions
Remain outside in 100+ degree temperatures
Variable working hours include weekdays, weekends and holidays
