Head Swim Coach – Surprise Storm (City of Surprise, AZ

Job Description

The City of Surprise is seeking a driven, energetic, and forward‑thinking Head Coach to lead and grow our USA Swimming–sanctioned club team, Surprise Storm (STORM). This position will take the lead in guiding daily workouts, mentoring assistant coaches, planning team development, and driving long‑term program growth. The Head Coach will also support the City’s Recreational Summer Swim & Dive teams, collaborate with swim lesson programming, and contribute to the broader goals of the Surprise Aquatics team.

STORM operates out of the brand‑new Oasis Swim Center, opened in May 2025. This state‑of‑the‑art facility features a 50‑meter competition pool, a 6‑lane warm‑up pool, and a beach‑entry recreation pool, making it one of the premier aquatic venues in the West Valley.

Key Responsibilities

Coaching & Athlete Development

  • Lead seasonal planning and daily workout design for assigned training groups.
  • Support assistant coaches in creating effective seasonal plans and practices aligned with long‑term athlete development.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with athletes, families, volunteers, and staff.

Support for City Aquatics Programming

  • Lead the year‑round developmental swim team.
  • Assist with the City’s summer recreational swim and dive programs.
  • Collaborate with swim lesson staff to ensure a smooth pathway from learn‑to‑swim to competitive swimming.

Administrative & Team Operations

  • Manage the organizational and communication needs that support a strong team culture.
  • Maintain clear, consistent communication with families, staff, and City partners.

Aquatics Specialist Duties

  • Assist with planning and supporting all City of Surprise aquatics programs and events.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support Surprise Aquatics operations.

Meet Director Responsibilities

  • Help plan, host, and direct swim meets, clinics, and special events at the Oasis Swim Center.

Qualifications

  • Prior coaching or competitive swimming experience at the club or collegiate level.
  • Strong understanding of modern stroke mechanics and training principles.
  • A growth mindset and commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Ability to obtain USA Swimming Coach Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid (StarGuard Elite) certification within 90 days of hire.

Starting Pay: $21.96–$24.16 Hourly
40‑hour work weeks with opportunities for overtime during swim meets, clinics, events, and administrative needs.
