Founded in 1966, Vancouver Swim Club (VSC) is a nonprofit, board-governed USA Swimming club dedicated to developing athletes of all abilities in a positive, supportive, and competitive environment. For more than 60 years, VSC has helped swimmers build confidence, achieve personal goals, and develop a lifelong love of the sport.

Position Summary

The Head Coach leads Vancouver Swim Club’s competitive swimming program, providing leadership in athlete development, team growth, practice planning, meet coaching, family communication, and the continued success of the club. The Head Coach will work collaboratively alongside VSC’s existing coach, sharing coaching responsibilities and helping provide consistency and support across the program. The role includes fostering a positive and competitive team culture, supporting athlete progression and retention, and developing the program to meet the club’s long-term goals.

This is a paid position of approximately 15–25 hours per week, including 10–15 hours of on-deck coaching and 5–10 hours for meets, planning, team development, administrative responsibilities, and other approved club activities. As the club grows, there is potential for the role to expand into a full-time coaching position, offering increased responsibility and the opportunity to help shape the future direction and success of Vancouver Swim Club.

Primary Responsibilities

Athlete Development

• Plan and lead daily practices.

• Teach stroke technique, starts, turns, conditioning, and race strategy.

• Encourage positive sportsmanship and long-term athlete development.

• Coach swimmers at competitions.

Program Leadership

• Partner with the Board to strengthen and grow the club.

• Assist with recruiting and retaining swimmers.

• Support fundraising and community outreach efforts.

Staff & Communication

• Work collaboratively alongside VSC’s existing coach to plan and deliver a consistent, athlete-focused program.

• Coordinate coaching responsibilities, practice coverage, athlete development, and meet support with fellow coaching staff.

• Communicate regularly with athletes and families.

• Attend Board meetings (when able) and provide coaching updates as requested.

Administration & Club Operations 

• Ensure timely and accurate completion of all coaching and program administrative responsibilities. 

• Coordinate swimmer registrations, meet entries, and meet declarations. 

• Maintain accurate athlete records and practice group information. 

• Submit required reports, paperwork, and communications in a timely manner. 

• Assist with scheduling, season planning, and maintaining the team calendar. 

• Collaborate with fellow coaches and the Board to ensure smooth day-to-day operation of the club. 

• Ensure compliance with USA Swimming, Oregon Swimming, SafeSport, and club policies. 

• Demonstrate strong organizational skills and attention to detail in all administrative duties.

Qualifications

Required

• Commitment to mentoring youth and building a constructive club environment.

• Highly developed interpersonal and management capabilities.

• Aptitude for cooperation with swimmers, parents, staff, and the Board.

• Must pass a mandatory criminal record screening.

• Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain all required USA Swimming Coach Membership safety and education requirements.  

• Previous competitive swimming experience as an athlete or coach.

• Experience working with youth.

• Lifeguard certification (or willingness to obtain).

• Experience with Hy-Tek/Meet Manager is a plus.

Compensation

• Starting pay: $20.00 per hour.

• All approved working hours are paid, including on-deck coaching, meet attendance, planning, administrative responsibilities, team development, Board coordination, community outreach, and other approved club activities.

• VSC will cover the cost of required USA Swimming membership, background screening, certifications, and required coach education/training for qualified candidates. In exchange for this investment, VSC requests a minimum one-year commitment.

• Mileage reimbursement for approved club travel.
