ABOUT US
HVA Current is a USA Swimming club based in Hampton, Virginia. We are committed to fostering athleticism and building a program that meets the needs of swimmers at every level. Our seasonal and year-round athletes train alongside one another, allowing each swimmer to improve stroke competence while progressing through age-appropriate challenges aligned with their development.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This position supports the Head Coach in implementing the team's athlete development model and coaching philosophy across assigned groups (Ripples, Waves, Riptides, Tsunami, and Ripcurrent programs).
This is a key leadership development role, with the opportunity to grow into a Head Coach position within 1–2 years based on performance, leadership, and program needs.
The Assistant Head Coach will:
- Lead designated practice groups
- Assist in seasonal and daily training design
- Support swimmer evaluation and progression
- Mentor developing coaches
- Contribute to a consistent, high-quality coaching system across the program

RESPONSIBILITIES
Athlete Development & Training
- Develop, follow, and implement seasonal, weekly, and daily training progressions that promote long-term athlete development
- Maintain high standards in stroke technique, training execution, and swimmer progression
- Work with swimmers to establish individual goals and track progress
- Maintain accurate training logs, attendance, and athlete records
Coaching Leadership & Staff Development
- Assist in mentoring and supporting assistant and part-time coaches
- Collaborate with the Head Coach and Head Age Group Coach to ensure consistency in coaching methods and training philosophy
- Contribute to development of coaching resources, drills, and teaching systems
- Demonstrate leadership on deck and contribute to a positive coaching culture
Competitive Operations
- Prepare and submit swimmer meet entries using PoolQueue
- Assist in meet planning and execution as assigned
- Attend meets and support coaching responsibilities across assigned groups
- Recommend swimmer placement and advancement based on evaluation
Program Support & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with coaching staff to ensure alignment across groups
- Assist with group organization, swimmer transitions, and program flow
- Support implementation of team standards and expectations
Parent Communication
- Conduct practice group parent meetings as assigned
- Communicate professionally and responsively with swimmers, parents, and staff
- Build positive relationships with families through consistent and professional interaction
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 2 years of lead coaching experience in an age group and/or senior program
- Demonstrated ability to teach stroke technique and develop swimmers across multiple levels
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lead and mentor developing coaches
- USA Swimming Coach Member in good standing (or ability to obtain prior to start)
- ASCA Level 3+ preferred, with progression toward Level 4–5
- ASCA Level 4+ education preferred
- USA Swimming University certifications (Core, ADM) completed or in progress
- Valid U.S. driver's license and authorization to work in the United States
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Salary: $70,000+
