South Bay Aquatics (SBA) is a USA Swimming-affiliated, 501(c)(3) competitive swim team serving youth athletes throughout the South Bay San Diego community. We are seeking a motivated, knowledgeable, and athlete-centered Age Group Coach to join our coaching staff.
The ideal candidate is passionate about developing young swimmers, building strong relationships with athletes and families, and creating a positive, challenging, and team-oriented training environment.
Position Overview
The Age Group Coach will be responsible for the development and daily coaching of assigned age-group swimmers while working closely with the Head Coach and other SBA coaches to ensure consistency in the team's overall technical and developmental philosophy.
This position requires a coach who is energetic, organized, dependable, professional, and actively engaged on the pool deck.
Primary Responsibilities
Plan and conduct well-structured, age-appropriate practices based on the developmental needs of assigned swimmers.
Arrive on time and prepared for every scheduled practice.
Provide active deck coaching and instruction throughout each practice.
Walk the pool deck and interact with swimmers in all lanes of the assigned group.
Provide swimmers with appropriate technical instruction in all four competitive strokes, starts, turns, finishes, underwater skills, and race strategy.
Establish individual goals with swimmers and monitor their progress throughout the season.
Develop swimmers physically, technically, mentally, and competitively in accordance with SBA's coaching philosophy.
Maintain a positive, respectful, and encouraging training environment.
Communicate effectively with swimmers and parents regarding athlete development, goals, attendance, meet schedules, and team expectations.
Work closely with the Head Coach and Lead Age Group Coach to ensure consistency in training, technique, and athlete development.
Attend coaches' meetings and participate in team planning and evaluation.
Attend USA Swimming meets and provide appropriate coaching and athlete supervision.
Assist with meet preparation, including entries, meet schedules, warm-ups, and athlete preparation as directed by the Head Coach.
Maintain accurate attendance records for assigned practices.
Follow all SBA policies, procedures, USA Swimming rules, and Safe Sport requirements.
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with athletes at all times.
Minimize personal cell phone use while coaching and remain focused on athletes during practice.
Assist with SBA-hosted meets, clinics, camps, fundraisers, team activities, and other events, including setup and tear-down when needed.
Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized pool deck and ensure team equipment is properly stored after practice.
Provide appropriate supervision of swimmers during practices, meets, and team travel when assigned.
Communicate with the Head Coach promptly regarding injuries, behavioral concerns, attendance issues, or other matters affecting an athlete or program.
Perform other coaching and team-related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Board of Directors.
Qualifications
Previous competitive swimming and/or coaching experience preferred.
USA Swimming coaching experience strongly preferred.
Current USA Swimming membership and required certifications, or the ability to obtain them upon hiring.
Current CPR, First Aid, and Safety Training for Swim Coaches certifications preferred.
Strong understanding of competitive swimming technique and athlete development.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work effectively with swimmers of varying ages, abilities, and experience levels.
Ability to work collaboratively with a coaching staff and follow the team's overall training philosophy.
Must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, punctuality, and strong interpersonal skills.
Must successfully complete all required background checks and Safe Sport requirements.
South Bay Aquatics (SBA) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to promoting the sport of swimming in Southern San Diego county. It was established in 2001 when the teams of Chula Vista Aquatics Association, National City Swim Club, and Eastlake Swim Team merged to become one of the strongest swim teams in the county. Together they provide over 50 years of swimming excellence.
